Mobile phone advertising 'could save users money'

11 Nov 2008

Mobile users may be able to receive free minutes and texts if they agree to have their phones used as a form of advertising, it has been claimed.

Nick Sim, a blogger on businessweekly.co.uk, reports that mobile network Blyk is testing a system for young people in which they receive several brand messages by SMS a day in return for free texts and voice minutes.

He says that Blyk claims to have more than 100,000 subscribers aged 16 to 24.

Mr Sim also notes that in the future, phones may be scanned for data in order to tailor adverts to individuals and questions whether users would be prepared to accept this.

Meanwhile, high street phone retailer Phones 4U has been found to have broken consumer protection laws.

The Times reports how a six-month investigation by Ofcom and Trading Standards found that it gave bad advice and did not refund or replace handsets.
