'Shop around for car insurance'

10 Sep 2009

Motorists should not immediately accept a renewal quote on their car insurance, a money writer has said. Laura Starkey wrote in the Independent that drivers could save money by shopping around for motor insurance.

She explained that the best deals are usually for new customers in order for providers to attract new business.

This leaves existing policyholders paying more for the same level of cover. Ms Starkey reminded drivers to make sure that they consider the standard of protection as well as price when looking for a new car insurance policy.

She gave a number of tips for saving money while driving, such as making sure tyres are well inflated and not loading a car down unnecessarily in order to save on fuel.

A publication from the AA, called The Money Saving Motorist, also helps people to cut down on the costs of running their car. Its advice includes driving within the speed limits.
