Home insurance claims up in stormy weather

10 Sep 2009

Improving storm conditions have seen the value and number of home insurance claims have seen a fall year-on-year, according to new data from Sainsbury's. Its Home Insurance Claims Index shows that 527,000 such claims were made in the first six months of 2008 and 21.8 per cent of them were due to storm damage.

But from January to June this year, the number was down to 373,000, with the average value of a claim dropping as well. It went from £918 to £735. Furthermore, in 2009, just 8.5 per cent of home insurance claims were related to storm damage.

Last month, a study by Sainsbury's found that the number of people planning to make structural alterations to their homes in the coming year had fallen. In 2008, 21 per cent of people had such plans but a year later the figure had fallen to 13 per cent. Loft conversions were the most common work that people did plan to carry out.
