Car insurance companies 'can judge on age'

01 Jul 2009

A consultation document from the Cabinet Office explains how car insurance companies may still be able to base premiums on age, despite tighter age discrimination laws.

Vera Baird, solicitor general and lead minister on the Equality Bill, says: "Older people make a strong contribution to society and it is totally wrong if they are treated unfairly."

As such, the Cabinet Office adds, the Equality Bill aims to eliminate negative discrimination without eliminating benefits such as the ability for car insurance companies to offer better rates to more experienced drivers.

The government body points out the importance of planning now to reduce age discrimination in light of estimates that the majority of the population of the UK will be aged 50 or more by 2050.

However, parents could find they are more reliant on their car insurance than other mature drivers, following the recent publication of figures from Sainsbury's Bank.

The financial services provider found that motorists on the nation's school run have experienced more than a million crashes and accidents during the past five years.
