Car insurance: Women 'need better knowledge'

26 Jun 2009

Women could be costing themselves money by not knowing enough about basic maintenance for their cars, according to new research.

A poll commissioned by Churchill and carried out by Opinium Research of 2,009 people found that men are more confident than women about their car maintenance, with 28 per cent branding themselves as experts while only five per cent of women said the same.

But the study also discovered that men do have more basic car knowledge than women do, as more of them could identify where to check oil, window washer and brake fluid levels as well as where to add extra oil.

Spokesperson Claire Foster said: "Having basic car maintenance knowledge can not only help prevent car breakdown situations, but can keep motorists, especially women, feeling more confident on the roads."

Motor insurance holders were recently warned by another insurer, Sheilas' Wheels, that they may not have the same level of insurance when they drive abroad as they have in the UK.

When insurers give a Green Card, this means a driver has the minimum cover required in another country but this is often only third party rather than full comprehensive.
